A huff is an exercise which involves exhaling through an open mouth and throat instead of coughing.
It helps to move sputum higher up your airways so that you can clear it in a controlled way.
This technique should only be used once you have completed airway clearance techniques to move the sputum so you feel it is ready to be cleared.
To “huff” breathe out quickly through your open mouth, as if you were trying to mist up a mirror or your glasses.
Take a deep breath in and then huff the air out until your lungs feel empty and/ or secretions can be cleared from your mouth.
During the huff your chest may make a rumbling noise, this means the sputum is moving.
Use your tummy muscles to complete this exercise, but do not do this so forcefully that it causes you to become wheezy or your chest to feel tight.
Aim to return to breathing control after huffing.
