Walking with a stick (heel strike and push off)

Walking with a stick (heel strike and push off)

Stand up straight with the walking stick in your hand.
If you have a weaker leg, hold the stick on the opposite side.
Begin by lifting the stick and placing it slightly further ahead of you.
Step your weaker leg forwards so that it is in line with the stick.
Step your stronger leg past your weaker leg to reach the floor slightly in front.
As you step your weaker leg forward, begin by lifting the heel of your foot up.
Allow your knee to soften, and propel your leg by pushing off the ball of your foot.
This is push off.
As you step your weaker leg through, pull your toes up so that your heel touches the ground first.
This is heel strike.
Continue walking forward in this manner so that the transition between push off and heel strike becomes smoother.
